Colour Box Studio Rises…

Well it’s been a long hard haul over the last month or so since I got the keys to 236 Nicholson St, Footscray, Melbourne, Victoria. With the help of wonderful volunteers we have managed to transform what was an old Tattoo Parlor into Colour Box Studio. Here are a few photos of the outside taken over a month long period, to show you what I mean.

What is Colour Box Studio you ask? Well, basicially it’s an artist run space – with the difference being that it is a multifunctional pop up creative space. So that means that the program will change between art forms and artists over time – for example, our first initiative is a Pop Up Shop with other 20 artists and our next program will be around Digital Media and engage a whole bunch of new artists. The program will continue to change and evolve throughout 2013. Ideas for future programs have been put forward that would incorporate performance, writing, music and more… Since we got the keys to the place we have been having regular meetings and discussions (amongst a construction zone in the beginning!) with artists as a way of consultation to find out what people are interested in doing and how they would like to use the space.

A bit about our first program – the Colour Box Studio Pop Up Shop: The shop showcases over 20 artists and displays their work for the public to come in, browse and buy. There is a diverse range of items in the store – jewellery, candles, body products, fashion, cards, homewares, gifts – all ethically produced by Melbourne artists, designers and craftmakers. The idea is to give artists an outlet to display work, create networks and bring in a bit of income. So far we have succeeded in doing this.

Our launch event went off with a bang – all the hard work by volunteers paid off and we were all able to enjoy the space, welcome people and celebrate together. We had a ‘Pop Up Fashion Show’ by New Model Beauty Queen, music by Grace Vanilau, Fina and Nala and workshops with Maryann Talia Pau for her 1 Million Stars to End Violence project. Also we had lucky door raffle prizes and about 140 people through the door on our first night. It was a great success and the feeling of community and support was overwhelming!
